Chaz is the only son of performers Sonny & Cher. He had appeared on his parents’ television variety show as a girl many times, so many were shocked when he transitioned to male. He initially came out as lesbian, but soon decided that was not the answer. He said, “I confused gender identity with sexual orientation. Your gender identity is about who you are, how you feel, the sex that you feel yourself to be. Sexual orientation is who you’re attracted to.” He is now an LGBT activist and leader who served as the director of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
