Benfica is one of the “Huge Three” clubs in Portugal – close by adversaries Sporting CP and FC Porto – to have never been consigned from the Primeira Liga since it was built up in 1934. Among them, the Big Three have calimed everything except two Primeira Liga titles with Benfica having won a record 34 times. This alongside various glass wins makes them the best Portuguese club as far as household titles (73) and general titles – being the main club to have won every single Portuguese rivalry.
The 1960s were the Golden Age for the club. The group that highlighted Eusebio – the main player to win a Ballon d’Or for a Portugese club – drove Benefica through a period amid which the club won eight Primeira Liga titles. They were likewise instrumental in breaking Real Madrid’s authority over Europe, winning two back to back European Cup titles in 1961 and1962, and were runners-up at the Intercontinental Cup in both years.
