He is an American rapper and singer from Louisiana. Kevin Gates grew up with his family in Louisiana but the family later moved to Baton Rouge.

At age 17, Gates attended Baton Rouge Community College. He has an African-American and Puerto Rican ancestry.

After Kevin Gates graduated from Baton Rouge Community College, he wanted to start his career as a rapper. He is married to Dreka Haynes. The couple has two kids together. Gates first daughter’s name is Islah which is his debut studio album.

Kevin Jerome Gilyard popularly known as Kevin Gates was born in Louisiana on the 5th of February, 1986. He gained his recognition in 2005 when he decided to sign to the label Dead Game Records. His first album was released in 2007 titled Pick of Da Litter.

Currently, he is signed to Bread Winners and has a partnership with Atlantic Records. Kevin Gates released two mixtapes entitled Pick of Da Litter and All or Nuthin’ in 2008. He described his two mixtapes as ‘a lot of pain … a lot of true stories’.

He has always had a passion for music. Gates’ career gained success in 2012 when he signed to Lil Wayne’s music label Young Money Entertainment. Though Gates was signed, he never signed a record deal with Young Money.

Gates released several mixtapes in 2013 and he later signed with Atlantic Records. He has collaborated with famous rappers including likes of Jamie Foxx, 2 Chainz, and Ty Dolla Sign.
