Michael Andrew Duff McKagan was born on February 5, 1964 in Seattle, Washington, USA. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1983 with one of his brothers and found work at a chain restaurant as a server.
He answered an ad for a bassist in the local newspaper, which led to meeting guitarist Slash and drummer Steven Adler, with whom he formed a short-lived band called Road Crew. In June 1985, McKagan replaced bassist Ole Beich in Guns N Roses, newly founded by Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin.
McKagan briefly played bass for Jane’s Addiction, at various times has performed with the bands Velvet Revolver and Loaded.
He is best known for his original twelve-year stint as the bassist for the hard rock band Guns N Roses. McKagan re-joined the band in 2016. Following his departure from Guns N Roses in 1997, he went on to play in many other bands such as Velvet Revolver (with former Guns N Roses band mate Slash), Jane’s Addiction and Walking Papers.
