Early Life

Floyd Joy Sinclair, now known as Floyd Mayweather Jr. was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His father is Floyd senior and his mum was Deborah Sinclair. His father, being a welterweight contender introduced Floyd Jr. to the gym at an early age, Floyd got his first boxing glove when he was only seven years old. Floyd came from a bloodline of boxers, as his uncle, Roger Mayweather was a WBA champion and another uncle, Jeff Mayweather was an IBO champion and then his father. Floyd went to Ottawa High School, though he eventually dropped out.

Career


Having a father in boxing played a major role in shaping Floyd’s pathway as this made boxing an integral part of him from a very young age. After he dropped out of high school, Floyd decided to focus completely on boxing to earn a living. Starting as an Amateur boxer, he had a few scars on the face, due to his defensive skill and control in the ring. Mayweather was nicknamed ‘Pretty Boy’ by his amateur teammates. He won the national Golden Gloves due to his amateur record of 84-8 in 1993, 1994 and 1996. He won a bronze in 1996, when he reached the semi-finals.

However, in October 1996, he became a professional, with his father, Floyd Sr. as his trainer and manager. He made history in 1998 by winning the WBC light featherweight championship, which was his first world title. Floyd took another Welterweight title in 2013, in a 12 round bout against Robert Guerrero.

In a match that was dubbed the “fight of the century”, he boxed with Manny Pacquiao, an eight-division winner in 2015, May had a unanimous win against the champion, thus maintaining his record to 49-0. in August 2017. He emerged winner against a UFC champion, Connor McGregor, in a 10-round bout dubbed “The biggest fight in Combat Sports History”, thereby keeping a clean sheet of 50 matches unbeaten.
