He began writing his own raps when he was in middle school, and released his first EP when he was seventeen years old. After five years, he self-released his first full-length album, and then released a mixtape in 2009. 

Along the way, Macklemore met a fellow Seattle artist named Ryan Lewis who was first hired to shoot promo photos for Macklemore but pretty soon the duo were collaborating musically. 

However, after years of pounding the pavement trying to get a major record deal, they went ahead and independently released their first full-length studio album, ‘The Heist’ in October 2012. The album has been massively successful, and debuted at #1 on the iTunes charts and at #2 on the Billboard charts. 

Macklemore and Lewis are unsigned, and have been featured in multiple music magazines and on television. The Heist has gone one to be an international smash hit and was even nominated for a Grammy for album of the year. Their song ‘Same Love’ was also nominated for Song of the Year. 

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released the album This Unruly Mess I’ve Made in 2016 and it reached #1 on US R&B charts and #4 on the Billboard 200 chart. He released the solo album Gemini in 2017 which reached #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and #1 in Canada. 

He alongside Ryan Lewis has had massively successful hit singles including “Can’t Hold Us” (featuring Ray Dalton), ‘Same Love’ (featuring Mary Lambert), ‘Thrift Shop’ (featuring Wanz) and ‘Downtown’ (featuring Melle Mel, Eric Nally, Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz). By himself, Macklemore’s most successful single is ‘Glorious’ (featuring Skylar Grey).
