He played 19 seasons from 1995 to 2013 in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees. He spent most of his career as a relief pitcher and served as the Yankees closer for about 17 seasons. Rivera was nicknamed “Mo” and “Sandman”.

He is a thirteen-time All Star and a five-time World Series champ. He is MLB’s career leader in saves with 652 saves and games finished with 952 finishes. The family lived in Puerto Caimto, a Panamanian fishing village that Rivera described as “poor”, supported by Mariano Sr’s job as the captain of a fishing boat. Soccer was his favorite sport and Pele his favorite athlete. He played baseball and soccer with his friends on the beach during low tides. They substituted tree branches for bats and cardboard milk cartons for gloves and made balls by taping wads of shredded fishing nets. He used this DIY equipment until his father got him his first leather glove at age 12. Rivera said, although he generally stayed out of trouble as a kid, he hung with the wrong people.

Mariano started his professional career with the Yankees in 1990 as an amateur free agent. He later made his major league debut in 1995. Riveria is an all-time leader for games finished (883) and saves (603) in the MLB.
