Martin Marcantonio Luciano Scorsese was born in New York, U.S. on the 17th of November 1942. He was inspired to direct his breakthrough feature ‘Mean Streets’ which became the first of many collaborations with actor Robert De Niro through a combination of his passion for film and his experience of growing up on rough New York street.

After the success of the film ‘Mean Streets’, Scorsese now had the money he needed to film Taxi Driver, a project which was difficult to get off the ground but later became a surprising box office success and ended up being nominated for several Oscars.

Martin Scorsese continued to be nominated for Academy Awards all through his career but he became famous for losing every time, even for classics such as Raging Bull and Goodfellas. Though his losses for the latter two films are often described as two of the biggest Oscar mistakes of all time.

He finally found Oscar glory in 2006 when he won Best Director for his movie, The Departed. Scorsese has won over 130 awards including three Golden Globes and been nominated for over 200 more awards.
