He is an American businessman and entrepreneur. Rick Hendrick started drag racing at the age of 14 in a self built 1931 Chevrolet. After college, he opened a small used-car lot and became the general sales manager.
At age 16, Hendrick won the Virginia division of the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest, a two-part test consisting of a written exam and a timed hands-on diagnosis and repair of defects planted on a car.
While attending Park View High School in South Hill, Virginia, he considered being a professional baseball player. After high school, he decided to pursue a co-op work study program with North Carolina State University and Westinghouse Electric Company in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Rick and his wife Linda were involved in a plane crash in 2011 that left him with 3 broken ribs and a fractured clavicle. His son Ricky Hendrick was a NASCAR driver, he died in an airplane accident.

Joseph Riddick ‘Rick’ Hendrick III was born on the 12th of July, 1949 in Warrenton, North Carolina. He is best known for being the owner of the NASCAR team Hendrick Motorsports.
After college, he opened a small used-car lot and became the general sales manager. He later became the youngest Chevrolet dealer in the U.S. He now owns the Hendrick Automotive Group and has 80 franchises in ten different states.
Hendrick serves as chairman and the company is the sixth largest dealership in the U.S. As a racer he competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He started a drag boat racing team in the late 70s that won three consecutive championships and set a world record.
He moved to NASCAR Model Sportsman Series and earned a victory. He started All-Star Racing in 1984. Rick now owns the Hendrick Motorsports racing team and has four full-time drivers: Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, and William Byron. His former drivers include Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Kasey Kahne.
