The International Press Institute Local News Accelerator is a four-month programme where you and your organization will build the foundations to develop a financially and editorially sustainable local media business. The programme, already in its second edition, will offer personalized advisory services, tools and guidance to help you reach audiences and empower your teams to grow into an engaged, responsive media brand during and after the accelerator.
The International Press Institute (IPI) Local News Accelerator Program is a vital initiative aimed at bolstering the resilience and sustainability of local news organizations. Recognizing the crucial role that local journalism plays in fostering informed communities and democratic engagement, this program seeks to address the myriad challenges these outlets face, particularly in terms of financial sustainability, digital adaptation, and audience engagement. Through this program, IPI provides tailored support to local news entities, helping them develop robust business models that can withstand the economic pressures of the modern media landscape.
A core component of the Local News Accelerator Program is its comprehensive training and mentorship offerings. Participants benefit from specialized training sessions and one-on-one coaching provided by seasoned professionals in the media industry. These sessions are designed to impart critical skills and knowledge, enabling local news organizations to navigate the complexities of digital transformation and leverage new technologies effectively. Additionally, the mentorship aspect fosters a supportive learning environment where participants can receive personalized guidance and feedback, helping them to implement innovative strategies and practices.
The program also emphasizes the importance of resources and funding in supporting local journalism. By providing financial assistance or access to essential tools and technologies, the IPI helps these organizations to enhance their operational capabilities and deliver high-quality news content. This support is crucial for enabling local news outlets to experiment with new formats, improve their digital presence, and ultimately increase their reach and impact.
Networking opportunities are another key feature of the Local News Accelerator Program. By connecting local news organizations with a global network of media professionals, the program facilitates knowledge sharing, collaboration, and mutual support. These connections can lead to valuable partnerships and exchanges of best practices, further strengthening the participants’ ability to innovate and thrive in a rapidly changing media environment.
The IPI Local News Accelerator Program aims to create a more dynamic and sustainable local news ecosystem. By focusing on sustainability, digital innovation, and audience engagement, the program ensures that local journalism remains a vital part of the media landscape. This initiative underscores IPI’s broader mission to promote press freedom, support independent journalism, and enhance the quality and impact of news reporting worldwide.

Program Format
- The format is based on IPI’s innovation learning journey, piloted through the 2023 Local News Accelerator, in which publishers from around the world, including Indonesia, Ecuador, Uganda, South Africa and more, achieved measurable benefits such as growth in readership, doubling of subscribers, building new onboarding tools and engagement channels and launching membership models with impactful crowdfunding campaigns.
- One key benefit communicated repeatedly from the group was that connections among the cohort allowed them to build a community with media in similar situations and share ideas.
