Cambridge University Mastercard £50,000 Research Grant Fund for Africans.
The Cambridge University Mastercard Research Fund aims to catalyze new and strengthen existing collaborations between researchers in Africa and Cambridge and support high-quality training activities. The Climate Resilience and Sustainability Research offers a Fund Research Catalyst Grant for up to £20,000 or a Workshop Grant for up to £50,000.
The fund offers two primary types of grants to encourage diverse forms of collaboration. The first, Research Catalyst Grants, provides up to £20,000 to support the initiation of new research activities. These grants prioritize projects that establish or strengthen partnerships between Cambridge researchers and African institutions, with the potential for long-term collaboration. The funding is designed to support projects that focus on climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and other related fields, encouraging multidisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.

The second funding stream, Workshop Grants, offers up to £50,000 to support the organization of high-impact workshops held in Africa. These workshops are jointly developed by African researchers and their counterparts at Cambridge, focusing on capacity building and knowledge transfer. They aim to engage early-career researchers and young people, equipping them with the skills and expertise necessary to tackle pressing climate and sustainability challenges in their communities.
Eligibility for the grant requires joint applications from researchers affiliated with African universities or research institutions and the University of Cambridge. Applicants are expected to be at the postdoctoral level or possess equivalent research experience. The program strongly encourages proposals that involve young people and emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration to drive innovative solutions.
By facilitating collaborative research and capacity-building initiatives, the Mastercard Research Grant Fund aims to empower African scholars, enhance research capacity, and contribute to sustainable development across the continent. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to addressing climate-related challenges and creating long-term, impactful solutions that can transform Africa’s future.
