About James Learmonth Malawi Full Scholarship
James Learmonth was a renowned educational practitioner in the United Kingdom who believed that education was the key to greater inclusion, social stability, and international cooperation. He also believed that teachers and educational leaders could only be effective if they engaged in continuous learning. When James died from cancer in 2003, his wife, family, and many colleagues and friends decided to create the James Learmonth Scholarship Programme in his honor.
Tragically, Dr. Elizabeth Bird, an educator who was admired by many and committed to her work, passed away on July 10, 2010. At the University of Malawi, a resource center called the Elizabeth Bird Resource Centre was named after her in her honor. Dorothy Kabvala, a postgraduate student working towards her Master of Education degree, was one of the recipients of financial support from Dr. Bird’s widower, Michael Bird. “Liz’s legacy lives on in a great many different ways.” Michael Bird
Both the James Learmonth Memorial Scholarship and the Elizabeth Bird Memorial Scholarship are managed by the Canon Collins Trust.
The goal of this program is to assist teachers and educational leaders in Malawi in pursuing educational studies.
