Trust for Sustainable Living is eager to listen to the voices of students as they share their unique perspectives on how nature can actively contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within their respective communities. Students are granted the freedom to approach this subject in a manner that resonates with them personally. They may opt to concentrate on a single SDG that holds particular significance for their community, or they can delve into multiple SDGs they believe are pivotal issues, exploring the ways in which nature has the potential to drive positive change.
Throughout this creative endeavor, students are strongly encouraged to infuse their essays with their own authentic viewpoints, individual experiences, and personal narratives. By doing so, they can vividly convey their thoughts and aspirations, effectively breathing life into their visions for a better, more sustainable world. Each student is invited to craft and submit a compelling essay in English, centering on the theme: “How can nature help us achieve the UN SDGs in my community?” This platform provides an invaluable opportunity for students to contribute their insights and ideas, ultimately paving the way for a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world, advancing the cause of sustainable development.
The Trust for Sustainable Living (TSL) International Schools Essay and Debate Competition is a prestigious annual event that plays a crucial role in promoting global awareness and action on sustainability. This competition invites students from around the world to engage in critical discussions and express their innovative ideas about some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity. By focusing on themes related to sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), TSL empowers young minds to become advocates for positive change.
One of the key objectives of this competition is to nurture a deep understanding of sustainability issues among students. The TSL competition offers two distinct categories: the Essay Competition and the Debate Competition. The essay length varies by age as follows:
- Primary students (ages 7-11): 400 words
- Secondary and College students (ages 12-18): 600 words

The Prizes
One overall Grand Prize Winner will receive a trophy and a cash prize of £1000 and £500 for their school, with one Runner Up receiving a trophy and a cash prize of £500 and £250 for their school (cash prizes paid in local currency). All participating Teacher Champions, Essay Finalists & Honourable Mentions, and International Debate participants, will receive personalised e-certificates.
