The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is open to exceptional students from developing countries with relevant professional experience and a history of supporting their countries’ development efforts who are applying to a degree program in a development-related topic.
The World Bank Group is an international organization that was established in 1944 to promote economic development and reduce poverty in low- and middle-income countries. The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and comprises five institutions:
The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD): This institution provides loans, credits, and technical assistance to middle-income and creditworthy low-income countries. The International Development Association (IDA): This institution provides concessional loans and grants to the world’s poorest countries.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC): This institution provides financing and advisory services to private sector clients in developing countries.
The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA): This institution provides political risk insurance and other guarantees to investors in developing countries. The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID): This institution provides facilities for the conciliation and arbitration of investment disputes between foreign investors and host countries.
The World Bank Group is owned by its 189 member countries, with each country having a number of shares in the organization proportional to its size and economic development. The organization’s mission is to reduce poverty and promote shared prosperity by fostering sustainable economic growth and development.
Eligibility Criteria For The Joint Japan World Bank Group Scholarship Program:
To be eligible, applicants must;
- Be a national of a World Bank member developing country;
- Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country;
- Be in good health;
- Hold a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree earned at least 3 years prior to the Application Deadline date;
- Have 3 years or more of recent development-related work experience after earning a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree;
- Be employed in development-related work in a paid full- time position at the time of submitting the scholarship application

Value of Scholarship: The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides annual awards to cover the cost of completing a master’s degree or its equivalent.
Duration of Scholarship: The proposed program of study should start during the academic year 2023/2024 for a maximum duration of two years.
