The theme of the UNHCR Youth with Refugees art contest is “Hope away from home”. UNHCR is calling on young people globally to submit a drawing that illustrates the power of including refugees. This year, the best designs will be turned into t-shirts by our partner UNIQLO and sold to support displaced people globally!
UNHCR, recognized as the UN Refugee Agency, stands as a global entity committed to the preservation of lives, the safeguarding of rights, and the cultivation of a more promising future for individuals compelled to leave their residences due to conflict and persecution.
This international organization takes the lead in orchestrating efforts to shield refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless populations. The organization’s overarching vision envisions a world wherein every individual uprooted by necessity can forge a more prosperous path forward.
Initially established as the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly in the aftermath of the Second World War, UNHCR emerged to extend vital assistance to the multitudes who had been dislodged from their homes.
Presently, UNHCR’s operations span across 135 countries, embarking on life-saving endeavors that encompass shelter, sustenance, water, and medical care for those thrust into displacement by conflict and persecution. This indispensable aid reaches individuals who often find themselves bereft of other sources of support. Moreover, UNHCR actively champions their right to seek safety and endeavors to facilitate their quest for a place to reestablish their lives. In the long run, the organization collaborates with nations to enhance and monitor laws and policies concerning refugees and asylum, while steadfastly upholding human rights.
Throughout its endeavors, UNHCR places refugees and those who are forcibly displaced at the forefront, viewing them as partners and central to the process of planning and decision-making. This approach underscores the agency’s commitment to crafting solutions in harmony with the needs and aspirations of those most profoundly impacted.
UNHCR assumes the vital role of safeguarding individuals compelled to abandon their residences, extending protection to both displaced individuals and those who find themselves stateless.
In times of crises, the agency swiftly delivers critical life-saving aid, while also serving as a stalwart guardian of fundamental human rights. Moreover, UNHCR is steadfast in its commitment to forging lasting solutions, working diligently to secure safe havens where these individuals can establish a secure and permanent abode.
Annually, a multitude of individuals are compelled to vacate their residences, seeking refuge from conflict and persecution, and are unable to return without jeopardizing their safety, well-being, or liberty.
Throughout the stages of the refugee and displacement journey, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, stands as an unwavering presence, offering support from the initial moments of crisis and throughout the extended periods—often spanning years—of displacement from their homes.
Operating at the forefront of emergencies, UNHCR provides life-saving aid and indispensable protection. It diligently advocates for the enhancement of asylum laws and systems, enabling displaced individuals to access their rightful entitlements. Furthermore, the agency is deeply committed to facilitating enduring resolutions, enabling individuals to either safely return home or establish a new life in a different nation.
UNHCR’s dedication extends to stateless individuals as well, striving to secure for them a recognized nationality. By doing so, the agency ensures that they gain access to essential rights, including education and healthcare, thus alleviating the challenges faced by stateless populations.
