Ban Ki-moon is a South Korean diplomat and politician who served as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 2007 to December 2016. Born on June 13, 1944, in Eumseong County, South Korea, Ban studied international relations at Seoul National University before pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Before assuming the role of Secretary-General, Ban held various diplomatic positions within the South Korean government and served as his country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. As Secretary-General, he focused on issues such as climate change, global health, peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.
During his tenure, Ban Ki-moon played a key role in facilitating international agreements, including the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He also advocated for gender equality and women’s empowerment, emphasizing the importance of women’s participation in peacebuilding and decision-making processes.
After leaving the United Nations, Ban continued his involvement in global affairs through various initiatives, including serving as Chair of the International Olympic Committee’s Ethics Commission and leading the Global Green Growth Institute. After multiple highly successful cycles of the Global Citizen Scholarship Program, the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens (BKMC) is proud to announce another call for applications for what will be the 7th round of our Global Citizen Scholarship with the objective to empower young African global citizens who are passionate about taking action for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The GC Scholarship is a fully virtual scholarship program that empowers young African change-makers to address one or more of the SDGs in their community by proposing and implementing a localized SDG Micro-Project whilst also benefitting from a summer school as well as peer-to-peer mentoring and various expert trainings and workshops on specific topics.
Requirements For The Ban Ki-Moon Global Citizen Scholarship
- African youth regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation
- Applicants must hold citizenship from one of the following countries:Ghana,Nigeria,Cameroon,Ethiopia,Kenya.
- Age group 20-35
- Applicants must have completed at least a Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Applicants must demonstrate strong dedication to SDGs and the ideals of global citizenship.
- Applicants must have a minimum English level B2 (European Standards)
