The Tarbell Fellowship is a distinguished one-year program tailored for early-career journalists who harbor a keen interest in covering emerging technologies, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI). This fellowship serves as a gateway for aspiring journalists to delve into the complex and evolving landscape of AI and its profound implications for society. It encompasses several key components designed to foster knowledge, experience, and networking opportunities.
Fellows selected for the Tarbell Fellowship embark on a transformative journey that includes a 9-month placement at a prominent newsroom. During this period, they gain hands-on experience in researching and reporting on cutting-edge technological developments and their societal impacts. This practical exposure equips them with the skills and insights required to navigate the dynamic field of technology journalism.
In addition to the newsroom placement, fellows participate in a study group dedicated to exploring AI governance and technical fundamentals. This academic aspect of the fellowship deepens their understanding of the complex ethical, legal, and technical dimensions of AI. Moreover, fellows have the unique opportunity to attend a two-week journalism summit hosted in the historic city of Oxford, where they can engage with experts and thought leaders in the field.
Financial support is a crucial element of the Tarbell Fellowship, with the program providing a stipend of up to $50,000 to assist fellows during their placements and other associated activities. This financial backing ensures that fellows can fully immerse themselves in the program without being burdened by financial constraints.
The fellowship is enriched by the inclusion of expert speakers, valuable feedback, and mentorship from seasoned journalists, as well as networking events with professionals from leading AI organizations. These interactions foster a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment, enabling fellows to develop a nuanced understanding of AI’s societal implications and ethics.
Upon completing the Tarbell Fellowship, the expectation is that fellows will carry their impact-focused perspective to major newsrooms and publications worldwide. Armed with newfound expertise and a commitment to responsible and informed journalism, they are poised to contribute significantly to shaping the discourse surrounding AI and emerging technologies on a global scale.
Benefits Of The Tarbell Fellowship Programme
- Placement. Fellows receive 9-12 placement at a major newsroom covering artificial intelligence. Placement details vary by outlet.

How it works
Challenging. Fellows will spend the year building skills and a strong portfolio to accelerate their journalism career.
As the fellowship is not associated with a specific news outlet, fellows must work hard to gain experience. Stipends may be used to support freelancing, placements in major newsrooms, or the production of other forms of journalism.
Full-time. The fellowship is a full time commitment. Journalism is a highly competitive industry, and we expect fellows to be completely focused on succeeding.
Remote. The fellowship is entirely remote. This enables us to support rising journalism talent from around the globe.
