Hurray! The 2023 British Council Women in STEM Scholarship Grant application in the UK is now closed to outstanding and high-achieving young women who applied to be in STEM for the 2023/24 academic year.
Brilliant applicants who applied are encouraged to start looking out for acceptance offers via mail from now till July 15, 2023. Successful applicants will be contacted by their university with offer letters on or before 15 July 2023.

What are the STEM subjects?
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and refers to any subjects that are categorized under these four disciplines. However, due to some academic evolution, there are also dozens of alternative versions of STEM (including STEAM, STREAM, and METALS) but STEM is by far the most widely used.
Are you a woman with a degree in a STEM subject and passionate about your study?
STEM seeks women with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics background, women who can demonstrate their need for financial support, and who wish to inspire future generations of younger women to pursue careers in STEM.
How to Recieve Women in STEM Scholarships
Applicants can receive a scholarship to study for a master’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics program at a leading UK university.
About Ph.D Women in STEM Fellowships Offer
If you have successfully completed a Ph.D. in STEM in the last three years, you could apply for a scholarship for an Early Academic Fellowship. Now in its third year, the British Council Women in STEM Scholarships program is working in partnership with 19 UK universities with the aim of benefiting women from the Americas, South Asia, East Asia, Western Balkans, Central Asia, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, and Turkey.
Application Perks for Women in STEM 2024
- Academic prestige – the UK’s universities are amongst the world’s leaders in STEM subjects
- Economic support will include tuition fees, stipend, travel costs, visa, and health coverage fees
- Special support for mothers and people with caring responsibilities
- English language support (IELTS)
(*)The costs for applying for the IELTS exam will be reimbursed to any student who is successfully awarded a scholarship/fellowship only.
Selection Criteria for Women in STEM 2024
- Can take up a course of study in the UK for the academic year from September/October 2023 – 2024.
- Can demonstrate a need for financial support.
- Have an undergraduate degree that will enable them to gain access to one of the pre-selected postgraduate courses at a UK university (for Masters level) or complete all components of PhD in the last three years (for Early Academic Fellowships).
- Can attain the level of English required for postgraduate study/research at a UK university.
- Are active in the field with work experience or a proven interest in their subject area.
- Are passionate about their course of study and are willing to engage as committed British Council scholarship alumni.
NB: It is important to note that the eligibility for a Master’s Scholarship and Early Academic Fellowships are different.
You are not eligible for a British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM if you:
- Hold dual British citizenship.
- Are an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee of His Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies/High Commissions); the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT); Department for Business and Trade (DBT); the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office.
- Are an employee, a former employee, or a relative of an employee of the British Council eligible countries or of the Women in STEM Scholarships team: Relatives are defined as parents or stepparents, siblings or stepsiblings, children or stepchildren, spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner (where the couple has been in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years).
- Are you currently in receipt of financial support or funding for your study program in the UK from any other source?
- Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship or a UK institutional scholarship/financial bursary.

Applications should be made *directly to the participating universities, please click on the links below for your chosen region or country for specific institutional information.
* You are not applying to the British Council.
Applicants need to apply separately for;
1. your chosen course; and
2. The Women in STEM scholarship.
Please note: You can make more than one application but need to apply through the preferred institution.
For Fellowships
Applications must be made *directly to the participating universities, please click on the links below for your chosen region or country for specific institutional information.

To be eligible for an Early Academic Fellowship, you need to have completed all your PhD components within the last three years. Read more here
