The World Habitat Awards competition has been run by World Habitat in partnership with UN-Habitat since 1985. In that time some of the world’s most remarkable and innovative housing projects have received international recognition for their work.
The world habitat is an independent charity working internationally to help bring the best housing to the people who need it the most. Billions of people lack a safe home due to conflict, natural and preventable disasters, and a disregard for the right to housing for all. The World habitat look for, award, and share ground-breaking and innovative ideas and solutions to these problems.
The early twenty first century is a period of enormous social change. Our world is being reshaped by globalisation, rapidly developing technology, climate change, polarising wealth and a growing population exploiting limited resources.
These changes are having a profound impact on where and how people live. They bring threats of social division and conflict. All too often the worst effects are felt by the most vulnerable people and those on the lowest incomes.
But change also brings opportunities. The early twenty-first century is proving a period of abundance for creative new ideas, for realizing innovative thinking, and for advancing the way homes are provided and how people live. The organization wants to make housing, not an investment, or a dream, but a basic right for everyone.
In 2022, we will be presenting Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards to the most outstanding projects and programmes.The two GOLD Award-winning projects receive:
- a trophy (presented at a global event) in recognition of their work to develop and deliver good practice in housing. We will work with our winners to ensure all events are COVID secure. World Habitat meets travel and accommodation costs for a project representative to attend the awards ceremony;
- prize money of £10,000; and
- follow-up support from World Habitat through our exChange program.
